CNA, 28 Mar 2020 - Tuition and enrichment providers are shifting online as centre-based classes are now suspended for a month due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tutors from MENDAKI's tuition programmes started carrying out lessons online, even before centres had to be shut, and students seem to be tuning in to what is being taught. Sabira Islam, a tutor from MENDAKI, says that the students remain "really enthusiastic", and listen quietly when others are being asked questions.

"So it is just like whatever I do in my class as usual, it goes quite [smoothly]."

Tutors tailor the online classes to fit the ages of the 7000 affected students. Younger children get interactive videos and quizzes, while older ones do assignments.

The group also recognises that not every family can afford resources for online learning. "We are always working with national agencies such as IMDA and schools," says Sabrena Abdullah, the Assistant Director of Education at MENDAKI. "We have several satellite centres [where] we offer some sort of gadget access for those students to do their work."
