CNA, 01 Mar 2020 - Education technology providers say interest in online learning and teaching platforms has risen significantly since the start of February, with ClassDo's introduction sessions for tutors jumping in frequency from once a month on average, to once a day. Other enrichment and tuition centres CNA spoke to also see a silver lining to the virus-related uncertainty.

Persuading parents to try online tutoring used to be an uphill task for tutor Mr Jason Lee, the founder of Love to Learn Education Hub - that is, until a few weeks ago. Recently, he has had two parents approach him specifically for online tuition, something he describes as "very, very rare".

"I have not seen it for the past four years that I've been doing online tutoring," says Mr Lee.

Parents he has come across think that their children might get distracted when they use devices to study, but Mr Lee disagrees. He says that the method actually requires greater focus. Mr Lee, who uses the online learning platform ClassDo, is keen on the interactive software because he is better able to tailor his classes to the needs of each student.

"I can give [very] short classes for students that are struggling with attention span [problems]," says Mr Lee on the advantages of online tutoring, as opposed to traditional offline tutoring which requires him to travel to students' homes for each class. "I can give very long classes with breaks in between for those students who need to ask [many] questions.

"For some students who need to meet me [many] times a week to support them in their homework... I can easily do that."

This story was carried in Mediacorp Channel 5 and CNA prime time news.
